Show up. Pay attention. Don't overreact. Carol's rules for life. (Perhaps stolen from Robert Fulghum.) They have gotten me through many tough situations over the years. Each has many daily opportunities for application.
Show up. Even Woody Allen was known to say that 80% of life was showing up. MBA schools would probably pronounce it goal setting. They'd advise that we break it down into component steps and write it down with a timeline for achievement.
They set up a method of objectively reporting on progress at each point. Granny intends to show up for granddaughter-time this afternoon.
Pay attention. Some would equate this with "living in the moment." They would caution that the past is gone and the future has not yet arrived. We can only affect the present time. Granny will hardly take her eyes off the beautiful 6-month old granddaughter. We will laugh together at every chance to do so!
Don't overreact. The pendulum always wants to swing farther than the center. Momentum is hard to resist as it propels us one way and then another. Energy forces us to surge upward and then gravity pulls us downward. Granny will try not to fall over when she picks up that sweet girl!
As the years gather momentum, perhaps new rules apply. Apologize. Reconcile. Ask for help. Carol's rules for old age. Perhaps next time I'll cover those. Right now I'm on my way to see that sweet happy face!
